Instawall

Drain:-3
Spell Costx3

Instawall causes a large permanent barrier composed of a given material to grow forth from other materials of that same general type within about six seconds (one round). This wall’s volume and shape can be modified up to the volume limit stated in the degree matrix below, provided that it remain a contiguous, simple, regular shape. For example, with a result of 20 cu', a caster may create a 5' x 4' x 1' wall, a (roughly) 1"x 1" x 20' wall, or many other possible combinations of dimensions.

A created wall’s base must rest on a solid surface which is capable of supporting the wall's weight. A wall may not be cast inside of another solid object. The wall, furthermore, must be able to support itself; it cannot fall over of its own accord once cast. As stated, unless the appropriate upgrade is purchased, a wall can only grow out of the material of its own general type. Paper could grow out of a tree, or stone could grow out of sand, but iron could not grow out of someone’s flesh. If a wall is made of a material which will not hold together or stand up on its own (materials like swirling air, rope, or water), it is held in place by a magical field which cannot be toppled. The materials composing the wall are permanent, but the magic field holding them in place (if any) will end when the spell's duration expires, and the materials will then act in accordance with the laws of physics as conventionally understood. If the material composing the wall does not require a magical field, ignore the "duration" column in the degree matrix.

A casting of Instawall is generally accompanied by dramatic sound effects as the material quickly bursts forth.

Spell Components

  • One cubic inch of the Material a barrier is to be made of is thrown onto the spot the wall is to occupy.
  • Ice walls may have liquid water as their component, but it must be clean water.

Limitations and Notes:

  • Range: Some part of wall must be located 100’ from caster at time of casting.
  • Walls cannot be cast inside other solid objects.
  • Walls must be placed on surfaces that can support them. However, this surface can have just the minimum of support strength. For example, a soil cliff can hold a stone wall, but if the cliff is undermined, the stone wall could topple.
  • Walls are not completely airtight unless they are made of an airtight material, such as latex.
  • Walls made of materials which do not naturally stand up on their own will be held up by magical fields for the duration of the spell. If the material does stand on its own, ignore the duration column of the degree matrix.
  • Ice walls may be placed on water, but only if they would not tip immediately.

The following are some other details which we could in the future add into this spell as upgrades:

  • Sealing: Caster can make the edges of wall seal shut where the wall touches another surface. This prevents liquids or gasses from passing through (provided that the wall isn’t porous and that it isn’t breached), and it makes toppling the wall more difficult.
  • Feather Casting: Caster may place the barrier on any surface, regardless of whether that surface is capable of supporting it. This can allow him to use the wall as a weapon.
  • Free Deactivation: Caster can dissipate any wall magically created with Instawall and reform it again within the duration of the spell (except permanent walls).
