One can scarcely imagine a union less likely to occur, at least in terms of mass differential, than that which produces the imp. Imps are uncommon creatures born of an extraordinary union of sprite and troll. Few comprehend the forces responsible for making this happen, and those who do know of such intimate matters say little of them.

A grown imp stands just under a typical dwarf’s height, is piled with muscle, and is festooned with typically trollish oversize facial features. It also has tiny spritelike wings which, while unusable for flight, can be used to make a teeth-gratingly unpleasant buzzing noise. Imps love to use these wings to bother people or to unnerve their enemies in combat. As if this weren’t enough (and as if the very universe would punish the folly of parents who would bring such a thing into the world), the mixing of troll and sprite blood gives rise to a number of characteristics that neither of the parents posses. Most noticeable is that the skin of an imp has a reddish cast. They also have rather sharp teeth and claws on their hands and feet.

Imps tend to be raisers of havoc almost from the first moments of their lives. Often they are petty bullies, since they are a little too dumb to be properly mischievous, but paradoxically they are terribly clever when it comes to simple malicious cruelty. The typical imp can amuse herself for hours pulling the wings off of flies, sparrows, sprites. So sociopathic runs the reputation of imps that it is said evil hosts sometimes recruit the to serve as important minions of pain and suffering, teaching them magic of the more unpleasant sort.
