Hobgoblin

Hobgoblins, the children of orcs and halflings, stand a head shorter than orcs, but are less stocky, excepting the large “ale-gut” which most of them posses. Their heads are nearly covered with a piebald collection of stringy, curly hairs. Their skin is usually a rather pale color.

Hobgoblins are exceedingly physical creatures. They enjoy combat and play fighting, though they rarely actually hurt each other. They are jovial and their senses of humor revolve around physical comedy. A hobgoblin party often involves elements such as food fights, boozing, free form sexuality, and vomiting (followed by friendly parties to clean up the messes, if anyone cares).

Like many races related to orcs, hobgoblins face a great deal of discrimination. This has led to the subjugation of the hobgoblin race in many places. Unable to find a stable place for themselves in a single location due to prejudice, most hobgoblins instead tend to wander in small tribes which resemble a cross between raiders and itinerant squatters. The migration cycle of a hobgoblin community typically begins when a hobgoblin family gets tired of where it is living (due to overcrowding and appalling living conditions) and therefore moves to the next community down the road, river, or coastline. If a new community proves itself comfortable enough, the newly relocated family will send word to their extended relations (either to brag and make them jealous or to let them know of a better place to live). This, of course, impels various other hobgoblin families to move to the new town. Before long, due to the halfling tendency to have large and closely knit families, and the orcish tendency to do what everyone else does, the new host community is saturated with hobgoblins. This sometimes causes resentment and increased prejudice from the locals.

Hobgoglins especially favor areas with financial institutions which offer credit and loans. It’s not uncommon for a family to take out a line of credit and run it to the limit and then forget about it, as a low credit rating is a sign of prestige in many goblin communities. Cultural misunderstandings are a common cause of strife between hobgoblins and other races. Due to certain resemblances to things in their own culture, for instance, hobgoblins sometimes interpret domestic disputes as entertainment and jail cells as youth hostels. The locals tend to view these things as disregard for local tradition, but they are in fact usually cultural misunderstandings.
