Herbs
Herbs are plants and other natural substances which people have found have some sort of effect on them, usually one they consider nifty. Being magical, herbs generally work instantly or at least relatively soon, though the Cobbler should feel free to exert his whim upon this generality.
All healing and pain reduction herbs affect a single degree of damage per dose purchased unless otherwise specified. When taking multiple herbs of the same type in the same general time period, just roll for addiction once (Cobblers may apply additional modifiers if characters use large quantities of herbs simultaneously). Additionally, when a foe takes one or more degrees of damage from a weapon treated with an herb which takes effect when applied, he is treated as having used the herb himself. However, herbs do not work on the undead, nor on inorganic beings such as golems.
It is worth noting that use of herbs is made more difficult not only by unpleasant side effects, the possibility of addiction, and often exceptionally high cost, but also by the restrictions of herbology companies such as Voodoo RX, Fizzer, WhackoWhiffWhine, Invulnerex, and Bovartis. Patents have been secured by these companies on many herbs, and locating the herb yourself is prohibited by law in some areas.
Please note that due to an error which occurred during playtesting of the Gygaxia universe, characters in Gygaxia pronounce the word “h” in the word “herb.” However, the indefinite article “an” is still used, as in the phrase “I’m going to take an herb” (where the “h” is heard).
