Gremlins are dwarf-sprites. From the dwarves they take a fascination with invention and an unparalleled mechanical aptitude. From the sprites, they take a great love for the unusual and unconventional. As such they are phenomenal inventors of strange devices, often of a sort which is likely to cause some real trouble. Well-known gremlin inventions include the whoopee cushion, the automatic small hole digger, a monkey-operated turkey baster, and automatically flushing privies (which empty themselves automatically into other people's yards). Typical gremlin inventions are unnecessarily convoluted and perform some bizarre task no one realized they needed until they owned it.

Gremlins have a rather bad reputation among many more populous races, particularly humans and dwarves, the races most likely to make use of complex machinery. This is because individual gremlins or even small groups of gremlins sometimes choose to dwell in areas with large populations of dwarves or humans, where it's easier to find supplies. Gremlins inherit a distinct lack of respect for social convention from sprites, and as a result, many simply take whatever parts they want from nearby mechanical contraptions. They tend to horde mechanical parts like dwarves horde precious metals and have lairs filled with gears, nuts, bolts, and sheet metal.

Because of their mechanical skill and casual attitude toward the ethics of sabotaging other people's equipment, gremlins are also often hired as saboteurs. According to rumor, in fact, a large number of gremlins are employed by the Secret Order of the Fuzzy Toe.
