Gnomes, the offspring of dwarves and halflings, are a fairly diverse race with few universal characteristics, save a short and (strangely, given their parentage) gangly build, a preference for little pointed hats, and a tendency to live in the upper parts of the underground. Male gnomes often wear small triangular goatees in a sort of quiet homage to their fuzzier parent race; most female gnomes, however, cannot grow facial hair.

While gnomes are often intense in a quiet way, they are also unusually thoughtful. Unlike most races which are easily bored in the absence of some form of direct stimulus, most gnomes don’t mind spending long periods of time engaging in nothing more than idle thinking. To this end, they often become employed in professions which are tedious by the standards of other races because such fields give them time to think about other things. Gnomes often work as bookkeepers, philosophers, department store mannequins, and lawn ornaments. Some find work in urban music studios as metrognomes. Those who cherish their dwarven heritage typically pursue industry, usually as inventors of elaborate contraptions; those who take after their halfling side prefer more domestic pursuits, like gardening.
