Gnarls are the children of hobbits and dryads together. They possess the characteristics of each of their parent races in a somewhat lopsided mixture. The hobbitish stature these creatures possess is only compensated for minimally by dryad blood, and as such, they rarely stand taller than dwarves. What Gnarls do inherit of dryad nature, however, they have in spades. The treelike “branches” which serve dryads as hair cover these beings more uniformly, running down their back and arms. The overall effect of this is someone who looks rather like a gnarled stump. They are sometimes called "bonsai" by dryads and just "stumps" by other, taller races.

Gnarls inherit resistance of the elements and extremes of temperature from their parents to such an extent that most actually find being inside somewhat uncomfortable. Many would gladly spent all of their time outside, if only they didn’t find the trappings of domestic life so rewarding. This duality produces a somewhat conflicted entity, but many find a good compromise by engaging in hobbies which emphasize both their connection to flora and their desire for comfortable living. Magical gardening is especially popular amongst gnarls. With this, gnarls are able to grow elaborate topiary into walls and roofs, bramble bushes into self-opening doors, puffball mushrooms that serve as squishy beds and even self fertilizing trees that form outhouses—all of which technically remain outside. Others become ordinary gardeners, herb dealers, or buyers and sellers of shrubbery.

Gnarls, on the whole, seem to favor careful problem solving and logical thinking to reckless action. In spite of their disorderly appearance, they are usually dependable and opposed to chaos.
