Gathering the Dice

Before plunging headlong into game after thrilling game of whatever you're playing with Story Arc, it might be wise to become familiar with the rules for checking to see if a character accomplishes what he sets out to accomplish. Heck, it couldn't hurt.

When there’s real ambiguity about whether or not you’re likely to succeed, you can make a check to see whether or not you did. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Collect a number of twenty-sided dice equal to the Attribute relevant to the action you’re attempting. If you're lifting something, for example, use Strength; if you're trying to crack a code, use Intellect.
  2. Figure out what Skill is relevant to the action you're attempting. This is usually self-explanatory; use Memory to remember things, for instance, or Persuading to convince someone of something. If you lack the appropriate Skill, assume your Skill is 1. It's still possible to succeed even with a Skill of 1, though your odds just aren't that great (although it helps to have high Abilities, and the difficulty of what you're trying to do will figure in later).
