Brownies

The tiny brownie race is a concoction of halfling and sprite parentage. Physically, brownies most resemble sprites, rarely growing taller than 12 inches, though they are stockier and almost never develop wings. They tend to wear their hair short, and they are often dressed in makeshift clothing—mainly because they can’t be bothered to worry about trivialities like clothing. Like sprites, they often prefer to live in forests, despite the presence of various predators there. Perhaps out of some vestigial shame for their prankster sprite parentage, they tend to help lost travelers and former victims of sprite pranks (if the victims will allow yet another tiny person cast a spell on them).

Brownies take after halflings in important ways, for they are incredibly domestic, though in a mischievous sort of way. They like to infest the homes of less innately magical folk, particularly humans. Then, during the wee hours of the morning, unbeknownst to the inhabitants, they clean it. Lazier or more devious brownies prefer to simply move objects around or rearrange the furniture. Some cultures see them as a sign of divine favor, while others subject them to some of the same stereotypes as sprites.

Brownies are well known as marvelous bakers of confections, and in fact a popular chocolate treat of their invention is known simply as "brownies." There are a few populations of brownies who have banded together to create an economic enterprise of this or similar skills, and have hollowed out several large trees to create factories.
