Adventuring LicenseAdventuring License
Some communities recognize something called an “adventuring license,” which allows the holder to engage in behavior which would normally be illegal, provided the activities can be justified as sufficiently adventure-related in a court of law. Adventurers may need legal expertise in order to argue their case in situations where the boundaries become fuzzy (which is, quite frankly, much of the time). However, an adventurer with such a license may legally break into private areas which can be justified as crypts or keeps, take valuables which they can argue are treasure, or kill beings who they can define as monsters. In general, activities generally perceived as petty (e.g. harassing shopkeepers or killing apparently innocent people) are harder to justify. In order to maintain an adventuring license, a character must fill out a large number of forms, present evidence of extravagant wealth, log a quantity of “dungeon hours,” and show evidence of monsters slain and/or people saved to a government approval board at regularly defined intervals (usually quarterly). They must also demonstrate a number of characteristics relevant to an adventuring archetype. For instance, a character who registers as a Barbarian has to carry a primitive melee weapon at all times, avoid words with more than two syllables, and wear a specific type of leather thong. A character who registers as a bard, on the other hand, must sing a certain number of songs of his own composition each day, carry a musical instrument at all times, and show evidence of a pleasant and flighty demeanor. Being caught failing to obey these requirements at any time results in hefty fines or jail time. Adventuring licenses may also cost a large fee to maintain and will generally be revoked if they anger too many powerful people, or if the funds they bring the city are outweighed by the annoyance of dealing with the repercussions.
